Operation: Iraqi Freedom
U.S. Marines in tanks rolled into Baghdad's Firdos Square,
just outside the Palestine Hotel in the city's central district, and took up positions on Wednesday. A senior U.S. Army officer
told sources "the majority of Iraqi forces have now given up."

A U.S. Marine column moving into Baghdad from the east came under heavy fire Wednesday afternoon at Baghdad
University after being greeted by cheering Iraqis earlier in the day.
With Iraqi forces surrendering by the thousands in northern Iraq and U.S. troops working to eliminate vestiges
of resistance in Baghdad, Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit could be the last remaining stronghold of his regime, a U.S.
military official told sources. The Republican Guard's Adnan Mechanized Division had been charged with defending Tikrit, but
that division has been heavily worn down by coalition air power.
